Digestible fibre is a slow releasing energy source; useful for excitable types, those in light work needing little extra energy and those that may be prone to problems where high starch concentrate feeds may be inappropriate. However, whilst forage may supply most of the energy and protein requirements, it is unlikely to provide your horse with adequate vitamins and minerals for optimum health and performance. Good quality forage, both digestible and indigestible (roughage), should form the basis of all rations for any horse whether resting or in hard work.
